Artist Statement

My practice is a continuous interrogation of the frameworks that define identity within the contemporary Egyptian context. I am deeply concerned with the deconstruction of social binaries and gender norms, challenging the rigid structures that attempt to flatten the complexity of the self. I was recently consumed by a question of what if art’s only duty was to be beautiful? This question serves as the foundation for my latest exhibition «Symposium of Absolute Beauty» (2026). Drawing a creative anchor from Plato’s Symposium, I explore the idea that the pursuit of love and perfection begins with an appreciation of the physical as a gateway to the divine. I seek to document my own intimacy with beauty through lines and forms that offer solace. I invoke Eros as the tender, modest god of love to bridge the gap between my critique of societal binaries and a desperate search for refuge in the absolute. My project «The Curse of the Unexpected Verdicts» (2024) serves as a psychological archive of my encounter with mandatory military service. I focus on the numbness of the procedures against the fear of losing my agency. In these moments of feeling like just another number, making art became a way to let those feelings out and find a ground in a future dictated by external forces.
