Mariam Hussien (b. 2001, Egypt) is an Egyptian visual artist and Teaching Assistant at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Mansoura University. She is currently pursuing an MA in Painting. Her practice investigates memory and sensory perception as formative forces in shaping artistic vision. Through figurative and layered oil painting, she examines emotional ambiguity, identity construction, and the fragile dynamics of human relationships. Her work bridges personal narrative with research-based inquiry, positioning painting as both an introspective and analytical medium.
Artist Statement
My artistic practice is rooted in memory, sensory experience, and the emotional structures that shape human perception. Working primarily with oil painting, I explore how personal recollections and lived experiences transform into visual narratives. For me, painting is not only a medium of representation, but a space for inquiry — a field where memory becomes material and emotion becomes form.
I am particularly interested in ambiguity: the instability of relationships, the fragility of communication, and the blurred boundaries between self and the “other.” Rather than presenting fixed answers, my work embraces open questions.
Through layered surfaces, figurative elements, and subtle visual tension, I attempt to translate psychological states into painterly compositions that hold both intimacy and uncertainty.
My current research, conducted through my Master’s degree in Painting, examines the impact of memory and the senses on shaping artistic vision in modern and contemporary art.
This academic investigation directly informs my studio practice, creating a dialogue between theory and experience. Ongoing projects such as “Why Men?” and “Who is Mariam?” reflect this intersection between autobiography and collective reflection.
They function as visual explorations of identity, perception, and self-construction, using painting as a method of understanding rather than simply depicting.
Through my work, I aim to develop a practice that is both personal and research-driven — one that positions painting as a space for reflection, critical thinking, and emotional depth.
