Asmaa Gamal Elgafrie is a director and producer. She studied media and has a masters degree in Drama and Television. She has directed many independent short films ,such as The Letter You Sent and Masrya, which have been shown in local and international festivals such as Afrika Film festival in Belgium and Silicon Valley African (SVAFF).

Her short films won five awards such as the Mentor Arab Film Festival in Jordan, three Jury Awards from Festivals Cairo short film festival and the Manassat film festival. In 2020 she got AFAC – Netflix Hardship Fund.

In 2021, her first feature documentary project ” My Dream to Fly ” was selected in Qumra industry week. In 2022, She participated in the Medimed in Spain. In 2023, She was selected in the GMM program with the film Independent in Los Angeles and Hot- docs blue – Ice fellowship in Canada. In 2024, her experimental short film was selected in the Vision du reel market.

Artist Statement

Asmaa Gamal is a documentary photographer and filmmaker. Following the publication of her first photography book, The Seven Seeds, she was chosen as the Arab photographer to work on a photo book Unforgettable Land in Thailand.

Her work has won prizes in many Arab and international photography competitions such as the Nile Media Award. Asmaa was also selected for the Info Nile Photojournalism Documentary Award grant. She participated in many international exhibitions, such as “Photo Istanbul ” in Turkey and then “CONTACT Photography Festival in Toronto.

In 2015, she got support from the Instagram team, for her visual work on Everyday Project, and then kept her photos inside the headquarters in New York.

Exhibitions

Her work has won awards in numerous Arab and international photography competitions:

-The Nile Media Award.

–The Info-Nile Award for Photojournalism and Documentary Photography.

– Exhibitions at ‘Photo Istanbul’ in Turkey, followed by the ‘Contact Photography Festival’ in Toronto.

– In 2015, she received support from the Instagram team for her visual work on the “Everyday” project, and her photographs were subsequently displayed at the company’s headquarters in New York.
