Ayah ElZawawy is an abstract artist whose work is deeply influenced by nature and the complexities of life. After spending years as a pharmacist and traveling extensively for both personal and professional reasons, Ayah found solace in art during challenging times. Now, after two years of painting, art has become their escape and happy place, a way to stop overthinking and connect with a deeper sense of self.
Artist Statement
My artistic vision was shaped by nature and my travels to several different countries. I lived in Doha, Kuwait, and India for varying periods. I avoid depicting reality literally, and instead try to blend reality with imagination or portray it from a completely different perspective. For me, art is a way to break free from the ordinary and try to spread joy using distinctive colors and lines.
For me, art was the revolution. My way of rebelling against the imposed and defying restrictions. When reality darkens and the scales are tipped, and double standards are applied… when facts are lost and chaos spreads, and people become greedy, and nature is violated and beauty is distorted, when we rebel and are repeatedly frustrated… I find my way out in art, so I distance myself from reality and exaggerate beauty, and that may be what keeps me from depicting reality literally, and my attempts in my works to break away from the familiar, or to mix different and conflicting elements or colors, or even to not clearly and explicitly adhere to expected proportions.
